Nokia Asha 501 : A quick hands on

This is the segment where Nokia was and still stands apart , the BUDGET phone segment ..Finland based manufacturer was once a leading guy , but few wrong , decisions and conservative decisions were taken , which lead to it's transgression , but Nokia actually made it with the Lumia range , which is still very famous among the all Windows Phone which are being manufactured my other manufacturers ... Asha series of Nokia also seemed to be doing well , since it's launch and BUDGET adjective  ..
Build Quality and Button Placements:

The unit that i had was the yellow color . The device is made out of mat plastic (back shell) , which is good as the chances of sleeping from the hand're  minimum . The build quality is good considering it's price which is less than 5K INR though MRP on the box was printed at 6k , but at online retailers this phone is available at less than 5k INR which as per today's rate roughly translates to $80.75 and about 48.95 British Pounds which is the good affordable price ..

On the right side , the phone has volume UP and Down button and a power button .. They give average and plastic type tactile feedback , but you will somehow manage it.. Also the power button is located  , just in center of the device , so it's easy to press , but considering the phone's screen size to be as small as 3" , button stuff is easy to manage ..
The left of the side of the side is an uncultivated button field with no buttons , but just  the plastic body of the device

On the top the device has small pin charger pin which was at work in the earlier phones of Nokia , it would be good if Micro -USB was the option for charging and syncing both . You also get a 3.5 MM audio jack and a Micro USB port for  syncing ..

Software and Performance :

Well , the device is running on Asha Platform 1.0 which is more inspired by The MEEGO OS that we saw with the n900 , but Nokia had to discontinue it's use being fully involved in the Windows Phone stuff . The SailFish OS by Jolla is designed by the former workers of Nokia , who left Nokia because of dumping MeeGo .. Sailfish is based on MeeGo ..

The software is dramatically based on gestures or swipes you would call . Whole story starts with the lock screen , right swipe for unlocking the phone . There are no  typical homescreens like Android , all you can do after unlocking the phone is just swipe between Fastlane and app drawer . Fastlane actually acts like the Notification centre + multitask Window , Fastlane is your personal home screen , it shows what you've been doing and upcoming events , facebook events etc ....

The device runs of 64MB of ram which is pretty low comparing with it's android rivals but it's pretty enough to handle the ASHA phone which can be quoted as FEATURE PHONES , not SMARTPHONES . Lags are seen in swiping between the fastlane and app drawer , sometimes device gets lag , on heavy use , but for most of the part it's smooth enough to operate ..
The Phones performance is better than the low end Android Phones ..

                                                                      Display and Camera:

This Phone runs on 3" inch display at 240*320 res which translates to133 PPI , which is pretty bad if you've ever used a high end phone , but considering it's price you can complain much .

The device has 3.2 MP rear camera witih no front camera , also flash isn't included . The camera takes photos that are blow average , and you won't like it at all , cameras of Galaxy Star Pro , and budget phones are better , but those low end android phones have performance that is bizarre .. This phones seems to perform better than low end android phones ...

Speaker seems fine but  not loud , but is comfortable enough to listen , also music player is fine in terms of functionality and also there's not much to talk about ..
The device also has glance screen and double tap to wake up functionality which is good ..Though smoothness of Lumias won't be there with this tiny guy ..

Other Stuff :
This phone is a dual sim device , well no 3g by the way , but it's OK for some , not for all..The device supports a Micro Sim with dual standby  .. Well all this is just general stuff .. Good news , is now the asha phones does include Whatsapp which was missing earlier . Asha 501 , users have to update the software of their phone to get the Whatsapp .. Nokia has launched the Out Of The Box Whatsapp version of Asha 501 , after releasing the software update for the existing users ..... Everything else is the same , what you would find in a SMART FEATURE PHONE ..... Coming to the apps . it's up to the mark of Android and iOS app store , but it does come with the some essential apps like WhatsApp , Wechat , line, some EA Games ,Facebook,Twitter etc , which're good for a general user , not for the app junkies ...

Unboxing :

What's out of the Box? - Asha 501, Earphones , Charger , Some paperwork , 4GB Micro SD Card included
